Architectural Design

In the 6th Semester, a larger picture is studied and its inferences are used to provide appropriate design solutions. The city where the site is given, the immediate neighbourhood, cultural history of the place, traditions and social fabric of the place and various other aspects are understood and detailed analysis done which is considered while designing. The Bye Laws and other Regulations of the place are considered. Various site and building services like fire fighting provisions, Lifts, Air Conditioning units, Water supply and Water tanks, Septic tanks/ Sewage treatment plants etc. are all well thought out while designing. As further integration of information from other subjects continues, the structural systems and construction techniques to be used in the designed building are also detailed out.

Various complexities involved in designing a Boutique Hotel were handled and appropriate design solutions were given by students. Understanding of the Hospitality Industry, its working, the Rating Systems for Hotels, the concept of Luxury, User experience along with other things like study of the city where the site is located, its history, culture, climate, vegetation, soil conditions, rules and regulations etc. were all considered while designing. The students kept in mind the site and building services and public safety and designed accordingly. The students came up with interesting forms and ideas for the Boutique hotel, trying to create unique designs. Students produced drawings explaining the concept, design ideas, detailed planning, structural and construction solutions and basement parking details.

Students of 6th semester participated in unique kind of design studio – “The online South Asian Collaborative studio”. It was a kind of collaboration of colleges of architecture in South-Asia to discuss pedagogical practices and share their approach, methodology and thus, share teaching practices for collective learning.

This collaboration was mentored by renowned academician and practicing architects from all participating countries. The on-line studio was facilitated by Manoj Mathur former HOD-Urban Design/ Architecture and Industrial Design, SPA Delhi. Ar. Sanjay Mohe -India, Ar. Pallinda Kannangara- SriLanka, Ar. Marina Tabassum- Bangladesh, and Ar. Sarosh Pradhan- Nepal were mentors of studio and they guide the studio. This collaborative studio was organized by ACEDGE- An Ethos of Learning. Almost eleven Architectural colleges from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka had participated in this studio.
