M.Arch Architecture Education - Semester 1
ARCHITECTURE DESIGN ISSUES IN CONTEMPORARY TIMES
Understanding Architecture in its broader meaning is not only about understanding functional efficiency of any typology, its more about addressing design issues that are very important in contemporary times. Out of many How to preserve traditionalism in contemporary architecture? Is one such issue.
We can term it as : “REINTERPRETATION OF TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE IN CONTEMPORARY TIMES”
Contemporary architecture is a wide spread architecture style which is based on advanced materials. On the contrary, traditional refers to vernacular architecture with simple and practical techniques which makes it the elementary form of meeting human needs.
Why addressing this design issue is important? In doing so, we propose that ideas and issues be opened up for the exploration and identification of new directions in green/sustainable and innovative techniques, which might be channelled and filtered through local knowledge, practice, and wisdom as much as by new industrial innovations and emerging technology.
Significance of this issue to design pedagogy: It will bring out absolutely innovative ideas among new architects when they think of traditional and contemporary architecture together.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN – IV is the selected semester for this project.
About the Project:The design studio is focused to work upon design of “Farmhouse”. Here more emphasis will be given to the functionality, local culture, context, spatial experiences and compatibility. Due consideration on understanding of issues related to composite activities, site location, impact of site, site features on planning and implementing the climate responsive strategies in design will also be given importance.
URUSA KHAN
Practicing architects always struggle for “Design ideation and design process to achieve innovative design solutions”. It means: how to bring uniqness in your design and how to make every other project stand out and also how to turn your building into piece of architecture?
Some parameters to tackle this Design issue:
Architectural design methods can be divided into two types one is Black Box design method and other is Glass box design method. Comparative study of two methods of architectural design, namely the black box and the glass box methods can be done. It is seen that the black box method is mainly intuitive/unconscious/not appear able while the glass method is conscious/appear able/ clear process it employs logically derived data for design. Various schools of architecture adopt either of these methods in training their students.
Significance in architecture pedagogy: It helps in exploring and developing a design process and analysing different design methods in architecture. Also It helps in achieving systematized design process which can be analysed and it is not a hidden process.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE: Students shall be introduced with this design pedagogy in their 1st year of B. Arch so that in their initial stages of designing they will be able to focus on key stages of design process. By adopting these techniques and following this process students will be able to perform better in problem solving, Designing, decision making, Analysing, synthesising, elaborating and imagining in their design problems.
DESIGN BRIEF
AIM: To enable design thinking through different ideation methods and initially enhance student’s creativity and design approach.
OBJECTIVES are to understand the space and architecture around them and Relation between form and function along with the importance of Observation i.e the designers should keep his eyes open so as to observe territory for himself.
