Key Concept
Initially in III semester students started with understanding the core of the design which is based on the theme ‘Vocal For local’. They interpreted the concept through reading and understanding various policies and programmes conducted by the Government under the theme Vocal for Local. They studied and analysed how local resources are responsible for uplifting the local art and craft of the particular region. To absorb the concept in detail they identified and analysed the precedent studies of Skill Development Centre all over India. They further studied the different skill development centre of respective region and how such centres are helping for uplifting the local resources and skills for improving the economical status of the particular community. Students then identified the skills and the space requirement for the same. Data collection and anthropometric study was done related to the specific skills. The inferences from all the data collection helped students in furthering their design.
Thus, Skill Development Centre as the major project and Entrance gate Design for same centre was taken up as minor project in III Semester.
Minor Project – CONNECTING VOID –Entrance Gate Design for Skill Development Center
The gateway is a void which will connect the user to the space or campus. So, the designing entrance gate is an important structure in campus design. We are initiated the students to explore the designing an entrance gate which will understand the concept of Entrance Gate and Why it is Important Feature in Campus, the different Dimensions and Anthropometry for designing, develop the understanding of interrelationship of activities like Guard room and its circulation pattern with the Functional aspect of security and the importance of Gateway design as character to the typology that they are dealing with i.e. skill development centre.
Design approaches adopted
Design project was based mainly on concept evolution and its representation in gateway design. Students were instructed to identify the raw product available in the vicinity and take it further in designing the gateway. Students were asked to do brain mapping for the same, making a rapid sketching related to the gateway based on the selected raw material. On the basis of sketching, they were asked to prepared workable model with material specifications and joinery details. Finally they prepared detail drawings of the gateway along with the views and final model as well.
Major Project – Skill Development Center
Time duration: 12 weeks
Thus, the Design focused on enriching and strengthening the local skills. The identified activities are knowledge driven enterprises which is rooting the thought of entrepreneur development. This centre facilitates and educates the people of all age group and gender to create better employment for Economical development of village and make individual self-sustainable and self-reliant.
The concept revolved around the form and spaces organization, where the students explored different options of space designing as per the activities, interrelating and hierarchy of space, interlocking spaces, adjacent spaces etc.
Students tried to understand the issues and challenges of the identified villages and analysed the existing infrastructural setup, socio-cultural fabric, a design intervention which acted as catalyst for the entire village was proposed.
The three villages of Nagpur district (Waroda, Borkhedi, Ridhora) were identified near Nagpur city within a radius of 30-35 kms. These villages were accordingly planned, developed and integrated in a holistic way to ensure appropriate quality of life, complete with basic facilities and amenities which might help in changing the perspective of the rural set up.
The selected villages were located at Nagpur City within Radius of 30-35kms. The site context is Natural Features of Villages and surrounded by road, industries, housing, dwellings, market, with natural features and flat-land forms. The site area for designing Skill development was in between 1000-1200 sq.m. for 50 nos. of people for services/ training.
Identified Skills for up gradation of Local Human Resources the Categorization of activities according to the villages were given as follows
Waroda Village: Food processing skill training centre (dal mill, orange, mango, Aloe Vera processing unit)
Ridhora Village: Bioherbal product Skill development Centre,Organic fertilizer Khadi & Textile and printing, cane product, cottage industry
Borkhedi Village: Industrial Skill Development centre (Fabrication, welding, electrician, computer)
Design process adopted- Precedent study helped students understand the basic requirement of the project. They formulated their design program and calculated area requirement through facilitation of various activities. Creative exercise triggered interesting ideas for 2D and 3D composition as well. The finalised composition was then furthered into detail architectural drawings. Working 3D model helped them to visualise the form of the structure designed.
